Mira Costa’s Comedy Sportz team won against Peninsula High School at its fifth match of the year on March 3 with a final score of 36-31.

Comedy Sportz is a competitive improve team that competes against other high schools. This year’s roster includes approximately 25 students of all grade levels that are both new and returning players.

“I’ve been on Comedy Sportz since my freshman year,” Comedy Sportz team manager and senior Claire Layden said. “My favorite part of being on Comedy Sportz is being able to bond with 24 other people that normally I might have not known before this experience of being on the same team as them.”

The teams competed in several different improv games throughout the match. Games included Expert Challenge, where players are given a topic and have to talk about that topic as if they are an expert on it and Countdown, where members perform a scene in two minutes and then have to repeat the scene in a shortened amount of time.

Comedy Sportz is a part of the drama booster.

“I laughed the most during the Expert Challenge,” match attendee and sophomore Maggie Weller said. “Everyone playing was creative and competitive. Plus it seemed like every person was really into it and everyone was having an overall good time.”

Teams receive points based on which team receives the most applause from the audience. In addition, a referee ensures that both teams follow the rules.

“I really loved the part of the match where the audience interacted with the players by asking for their advice on a mock panel,” Weller stated. “It was awesome that we got to engage in the actual game instead of just watching.”

Last year Costa’s Comedy Sportz team won first place at the Fullerton Theatre Festival, a two day competition in which high school students perform scenes from plays and participate in acting games, for Best Improv. The team hopes to continue their success throughout this year. Comedy Sports’s next match is on May 26.

Despite their loss, Peninsula High School also has a successful comedy sportz team.

“The match was a success,” Layden said. “We had a full house and I’m really proud of our new and old players that performed.”
