Senior Devan Malik works with a homeless aid charity based in Los Angeles called The Giving Spirit to start a donation drive for domestic abuse victims.
Malik, along with 11 other students from all around Los Angeles, is a member of the Giving Spirit Youth Council. For their annual project this year, they have decided to collect monetary donations through GoFundME to put together aid kits for residents of the Alexandria House, a shelter for displaced women. According to Malik, the drive started at the beginning of April and will run into May, but the exact date has not yet been set in stone.
We’re only collecting monetary donations through a GoFundMe, which will be used to buy items like socks, makeup, and feminine hygiene products,” said Malik.
In addition to the 11 other students on the Youth Council, a moderator assists with running the council meeting. This year, it is the women of the Alexandria House. According to Malik, every year the council selects a specific group to aid for each annual event. Once the donation drive is finished they will buy all the items, pack them into kits themselves, and drop them off at the Alexandria House.
Malik has volunteered with The Giving Spirit for seven years, and it is his second year on the Youth Council. For their annual project last year, they raised funds to donate 40 laptops to homeless LAUSD students.
“It’s super gratifying to work with The Giving Spirit and impact the lives of others for the better,” Malik said. “One of the best parts about being on the Youth Council is participating in outreach events where we distribute supplies to homeless people and listen to their stories. It’s incredibly moving and eye-opening to hear about their past.”
