Student dress code at Costa

Students at Mira Costa should stop wearing pajamas to school. Ever since Covid students at Costa have increasingly worn pajamas and sweats to school opposed to actual clothes like jeans, shorts, skirts, jackets, etc.

At Costa the trend of wearing sweats or pajama pants to school has soared over the most recent years, as these clothes are a more comfortable choice. Although a comfortable option for some days, students shouldn’t be dressing like this most days of the week. Students should try to reserve this casual attire for big test days or days where they haven’t gotten much sleep before. Instead they should be encouraged to embrace a more put-together look by wearing jeans, shorts, dresses, jackets, skirts, sweaters, and so forth.

If a student chooses to dress for success their mindset can be positively affected throughout the day. A student’s presentation of the way they look generally influences their academic performance and overall attitude. Dressing in more formal attire instills a sense of readiness and responsibility for what lies in the day ahead.

Many students at Costa agree that wearing pajamas and sweats to school negatively impacts their mentality throughout the day. According to a junior Mira Costa student, Lily Hoffner, coming to school in informal clothing makes her feel less inclined to be productive and engaged in her studies. So, opting for this more formal attire approach could positively shift students’ engagement in their academic performances overall.

Additionally, dressing more formally at the high school level can better prepare students for future professional environments. At adulthood workplaces the way one dresses can be crucial to their everyday job. If students begin to show up in formal attire now, they will make strong habits of dressing up for all their working environments. These habits can then translate into their adult lives ultimately setting students up for greater success in their futures.

While there should still be a place for students to dress for comfort on days like finals week or sleepless nights, it is important to encourage them to mostly dress in formal attire, as it establishes a more serious and focused learning environment.

So, embracing more formal wardrobes most days of the week at Costa can enhance students’ daily experiences, improve their academic performance, and better prepare them for life beyond high school. By reserving comfortable clothing for specific occasions a sense of professionalism can be created within the community, setting students up for success in their academics now as well as their future endeavors.
