Water Polo Bay League Carousel Tournament

Mira Costa hosted the Bay League Carousel Tournament over this week and the last, bringing together local high school teams in pursuit of big wins. Varsity Boys Waterpolo kicked off the tournament on Thursday against Peninsula and Santa Monica, winning both.

Costa beat Peninsula 20-3 and Santa Monica 19-5, leaving boy water polo with 22 wins and 5 losses overall. Costa played well as a team, finishing out the first quarter with a 6-2 lead. Boys Water Polo Freshman Ryan Lee underscores the importance of strong leadership and goalkeeping in maintaining an advantage from start to finish.

“We always kept the lead throughout the game thanks to our great goalies Cooper Agens and Grant Anderson along with our team captains Flynn Guenther and Lucas Pearce putting many points onto the board for Costa,” Lee said.

Player Henry Skinner’s goal was a standout moment during the game according to Lee, a highlight he believed captured the team’s momentum and energy. Nevertheless, the team still acknowledges they have areas to improve in despite the current strong performance.

“I believe we played very well as a team, yet we need to find balance with our mentality when coming into a game,” said Lee.

Ranked 10th in California and 13th nationally, Costa’s boys water polo team hopes to continue through the season and end off strong. Lee aims to continue growing as a player and contribute to the team’s success.

“I would like to end off this season finishing in the open division,” Lee said. “But as an individual player, I would like to still keep on building the skills and learning how to become a more aware player.”

Lee explains that the team is a community with a “bond that can’t be broken.” Together, players can carry this connection forward, using trust and teamwork as the building blocks of their wins.

“Being a part of this team has taught me so much from a water polo standpoint and just how to play for your team instead of yourself,” said Lee.
