Seniors Brenna Traudt, Tara Khaleghian, and Esaf Fares have found their purpose in creating spaces where everyone feels valued. As the co-presidents of Friendship Club, a group that connects general education students with those in the special education program, they are dedicated to building inclusion and genuine friendships.
Traudt’s passion for the club began her sophomore year when a friend encouraged her to join.
“I joined the Friendship Club because I wanted to help make everyone feel included,” Traudt said. “Once I started spending time with the students, I realized how much joy it brought me.”
Khaleghian began her journey with Friendship Club during her freshman year. She now deepens her commitment to inclusion by working with Social Butterflies, a Friendship Club connected program that teaches social skills to special education students.
“We meet once a month and it really benefits the kids to learn skills they will actually use.” Khaleghian said.
Fares organizes activities and events that bring students together. From lunchtime hangouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to crafts and karaoke days, his goal is to make all members feel seen, supported, and appreciated.
“I like being a president because I get to work with other people, and help out at events. Our ice cream and pizza days are my favorite.” said Fares, through ASL teacher, Kara Sorensen. “It’s cool to socialize with friends and support one another.”
