Cross Country Glow Run

On November 1, the Mira Costa Cross Country team hosted their annual Glow Run in memory of Ryan James, a recent graduate who tragically passed away just days earlier. The event, normally focused on 400-meter repeats, took on a deeper meaning as the team gathered to honor his life.

“Ryan meant a lot to us,” senior Sara Torres said. “And in celebrating him with our glow run, it showed how much we really cared about him.”

Before the run began, teammates and friends held a memorial, sharing memories of James and reflecting on his impact on the team. His positive energy and encouragement left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.

“He was always so motivated at practice,” said senior Luuk Van Meurs. “Ryan would always motivate others to do the same and feel themselves.”

Runners wore glow bracelets along the course to symbolize Ryan’s bright presence, a visual tribute that illuminated the evening. Coaches also spoke, highlighting the importance of community support during moments of loss. The Glow Run transformed into both a memorial and a celebration of his life.

“I always thought of Ryan to be a big up-lifter to his teammates, ” junior Stella Grasso said. “I would always see him lift others up and cheer them on.”

The event demonstrated the resilience of the Mira Costa Cross Country team, showing how the community comes together to support one another. As the team completed their laps, many paused at the starting line or along the course to reflect and honor Jame’s memory. Jame’s influence continues to be felt through the bonds he helped create and the memories he left behind.

“I didn’t know Ryan very well, but he was a big inspiration to me,” sophomore Nolan Zachos said. “He was one of the biggest supporters of the JV and Frosh teams too.”
