Mustang Madness

Mira Costa Basketball hosted its annual Mustang Madness on Tuesday, November 4, from 6-7pm in the gym to promote the upcoming basketball season.

This is the fourth year that the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have hosted this event in collaboration with many organizations on campus. Girls’ basketball assistant coach Haley Herdman introduced the event in 2022, and it has become a Costa tradition since then.

“My favorite part of the event was definitely making up handshakes and watching the dances,” said Varsity Girls basketball member Addie Harbaugh.

Mustang Madness started by introducing the frosh, JV, and Varsity girls and boys basketball teams. Varsity players then engaged in a series of games to show off their shooting and maneuvering abilities. After that, Mira Costa students from various organizations, including ASB, football, cheer, and water polo, took part in a half-court shooting competition.

“Everyone at Mustang Madness had fun together, worked together, and were creative,” said Harbaugh.

The event featured entertaining performances by Costa’s JV and Varsity Dance Teams. The Dance Team performed at the beginning and end of the event with Jazz and Hip-hop routines they plan to perform in the upcoming basketball season.

“We love performing at Mustang Madness,” said Dance Team member Layla Mazry. “The crowd is always so energetic and it gets us ready for the basketball season.”

Adding to the excitement, both Varsity basketball teams surprised the crowd with a dance routine choreographed by members of the dance team, featuring popular songs like “Milkshake” and “Magic Mike.” To finish the night strong, the fan-favorite dunk competition featured boys’ Varsity basketball players dunking in front of the crowd. Overall, the night was a success and hyped up the upcoming season, which starts in November.

“Im excited to play my last year with the seniors and make new memories with our team this season” said Varsity Girls basketball member Kylee Yeh.
