A Final Look at “Stranger Things”: What Missed

By Lucy Hansen

For a TV show that defined an entire generation of television, “Stranger Things” released its final season to sky high expectations. After years of anticipation and cultural dominance, the fifth and final season was meant to be more than just grand. It was meant to bring a satisfying conclusion to the decade long production. However, viewers questioned whether the ending truly gave the series the resolution it deserved.

While the finale was not entirely unenjoyable, it fell noticeably short of the standards set by earlier seasons. The pacing felt uneven, key emotional moments lacked impact, and the story failed to deliver the payoff audiences had been waiting for. Compared to the tightly run and carefully structured storytelling that made the show successful in the first place, the ending felt underwhelming.

Much of the finale relied heavily on nostalgia, attempting to compensate for weaker plot lines with callbacks and familiar imagery. For some viewers, this strategy worked, offering comfort and emotional resonance. But for many others, it felt frustrating and disappointing, raising the question of whether nostalgia was being used as a substitute for a meaningful resolution.

As the series progressed, the writing appeared increasingly sloppy. Plot lines were left unaddressed, character arcs felt rushed or abandoned, and the narrative was not cohesive with earlier seasons. Even simple mistakes like having the wrong color for a prop were left in the final cut.

The inadequacies were so blatant that some viewers went as far as to convince themselves that the show has not truly ended, but instead the conclusion is just an elaborate ruse to lead up to one of the best cinematic plot twists in history. (It wasn’t.)

Viewers were hoping to gain some closure when the behind the scenes documentary was released, however, that only led to more disappointment. The documentary disclosed that the writers actually hadn’t finished the script for season 5 when they began filming it.

Ultimately, “Stranger Things” will always be remembered for its cultural impact and unforgettable storyline, but it will also be remembered for its really crap ending.
