Costa Girls Volleyball Out

After eight seasons of leading the Costa girls volleyball program to a record of 195-56, Head Coach Cameron Green’s contract has not been renewed. This marks the end of an era defined by many high-level athletes who have gone through Green’s coaching. His departure has elicited strong reactions throughout the community from both athletes and parents.
Since the start of Green’s tenure, the team has played at a high level, with many players recruited out of Costa by Division 1 colleges. Charlie Fuerbringer and Audrey Flanagan both earned national recognition by ranking as the number one in their respective classes. However, Costa ultimately fell short of winning a championship despite the talent on the team.
“I started club volleyball at eight years old and have had nearly a dozen coaches in my life, but I have never had a coach who has cared about the players the way Cam does,” said Flanagan. “This isn’t a side job for him, this program is truly his life, and that love shows.”
Despite the strong talent pool that has moved through the gym over the years, Costa’s inability to capture a CIF or State championship under Green’s leadership slowly became a letdown.
“I think it was time for a new coach. He did a great job with the program and definitely impacted me as a player, but at the end of the day I think the program needs a new leader,” said senior varsity player Sage Meidroth. “He had close relationships with many families, which made it hard for people to say goodbye, but I’m excited to see what this new chapter holds.”
As Mira Costa searches for a new head coach, the program stands at a key turning point heading into the 2027 season. With an elite foundation and future athletes flowing in each year, many hope the next coach will boost the program to the next level. While the departure marks the end of an era, it also opens new possibilities.
“All coaches are on a year by year contract, so each year we ask whether or not it’s for the betterment of the program to continue with the current staff that’s in place. Then for this upcoming season, we decided to go in a different direction,” said Dr. Huynh. “After the news came out, we got a lot of positive and negative feedback based on the decision that was made.”
