The Link Crew Club has made a big difference in Mira Costa’s school culture and how students connect with each other. According to our school’s website, Link Crew is a group of juniors and seniors who want to help others. Their main goal is to guide incoming freshmen and help them adjust to high school. They support them during orientation, finals, and other important times during the school year.
Since Link Crew started at Costa, the school has become more welcoming—especially for freshmen. New students now feel more supported and included from the very first day of school.
Many freshmen say their Link Leaders were the first people to make them feel like they belong. They often continue turning to their Link Leaders throughout the year whenever they need advice or someone to talk to.
“I first initially wanted to join Link Crew because I saw how helpful they were during my freshman orientation,” Junior Amanda Dellenbach said, “I wanted to be comfortable around freshmen as an upperclassmen and be a leader on campus.”
Link Crew’s mission is to build student leaders who are confident, kind, and able to work well with others. This goal shows in everything they do. Link Leaders are trained to lead small groups, speak in front of crowds, and help students feel more comfortable on campus. They learn how to be good role models and how to support other students during stressful times, like finals or the start of the year.
Ms. Hutchinson, the Link Crew teacher, plays a big part in the club’s success. She has been leading Link Crew for many years and puts in a lot of time and effort to make sure it runs smoothly. She was recently nominated as Teacher of the Year for our district, which shows how much she cares about her students and the school. Ms. Hutchinson helps train the Link Leaders and gives them the tools they need to be helpful, kind, and confident.
“In the beginning, Link Crew focused primarily on freshmen involvement, but since then we’ve started designing events for the whole campus as well,” Hutchinson said, “We still want to focus on freshmen, but by creating other events we also make opportunities for all students.”
The club is made up of juniors and seniors who choose to join because they want to make a difference. They care about others and want to lead in a positive way. Link Crew members go through special training and help out at events throughout the year.
They also make sure new students feel safe and welcome every day not just at big events. Whether it’s showing someone where a classroom is, sitting with them at lunch, or answering a question in the hallway, Link Leaders are always there to help.
“We have traditions that have stuck with us since the beginning,” Hutchinson noted, “like when the students walk through campus and share stories about different parts of Costa to kind of illuminate how cool this place can be.”
In the end, Link Crew has made a lasting impact at Mira Costa. It’s helped build a more positive, caring environment where students look out for one another. The club will likely keep making a difference for many years. By helping new students feel welcome and giving older students a chance to lead, Link Crew helps everyone at Costa feel like they’re part of something special.
