Allcove Beach Cities hosted an immersive teen open mic night supporting local youth in both creativity and community on Feb. 13.

The event was organized by local musicians who graduated from Mira Costa High School, including Hermosa local Cole Ficklin. Ficklin, the Indivisible Arts Allcove coordinator, is a Costa graduate, who now works in the field of mental health with youth in the South Bay community.

“Open mic night gives students the opportunity for expression, and a chance to gain courage performing in front of their peers,” said Ficklin. “I’ve heard it said that if you want to feel your soul, sing from the heart. And if you want to grow, get in front of your peers and sing something. Overall, it’s a cool opportunity.”

Teenage musician Hudson Grabher led the event with a focus on giving the South Bay’s local youth a space for support, self expression, and mental health support.

“It’s really inspiring,” said Grabher. “It’s really cool seeing other teens from other high schools sing original songs.”

Between the awkward and funny moments, the night was full of laughter. An atmosphere was created for teens to feel able to express themselves freely without fear of what others would think about them, a space where teens put their hearts and most authentic selves.

Participants don’t need to perform. Much of the audience comes to listen and observe.

Open Mic Night is one of the many ways that local teens and Mira Costa students can get involved in the community.
