Beloved History teacher Mr. Kloes retires from room 200 after 24 years of teaching at Mira Costa. He began teaching at Costa in 2001 and ultimately resigned due to opportunities overseas.
Kloes remarks “I think teaching has reinforced the importance of being a good human and the importance of showing respect to all people. I try very hard to be respectful of others and I think this is important for all teachers.”
Throughout his career Kloes has not only learned to form bonds with his students but learned how to encourage curiosity and learning through his classes. He tries to make history an interesting class, bringing immense effort and passion for history to the classroom everyday in hopes the students will adopt his love for history.
Kloes explains “It has been great getting notes and comments from students at the end of the school year about how they have a newfound interest in history. Comments like these make all the hard work pay off.”
Costa sophomore Zairah Assibey in Mr. Kloes Modern World class explains “I enjoyed how Mr. Kloes tries to make every class engaging, he is such an inspiring and truly passionate teacher.` He helped us to understand the world and our place in it, he enthusiasm is contagious.”
Originally Kloes graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in political science. He then went on to Loyola Marymount where he received his teaching credential in Social Studies. After his original job in sales he pivoted to become a substitute teacher after encouragement from his dad. He became a substitute teacher and football coach at Beverly Hills High School. He then went on to teach at Palisades High School for two years, and then back to Beverly Hills for four more years before transferring to Mira Costa.
Sophmore in Honors Modern World History Sejal Kerachan states “ definitely the best history teacher i’ve ever had, he inspired me to be more interested in history and it ended up being my favorite class.”
Throughout his teaching career Kloes spent his time outside of teaching, or lesson planning with his family and two dogs. He loves to spend time outdoors either surfing, at the beach, or at his ranch in Oregon, which is what his retirement will consist of. Teaching has also cultivated Kloes love for reading especially with historical fiction books, reading around fifteen to twenty books a year. He also loves the discipline teaching has provided to him. This includes waking up at 4:30 to exercise while also managing and lesson planning five classes five days a week.
