“Captain America: Brave New World” came to theaters in Feb. 14, marking Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) first solo outing as the new Captain America, previously played by Chris Evans. Tasked with protecting President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) from an escalating global threat, Wilson finds himself caught in a web of political intrigue. Thematically, the movie attempts to explore power, redemption, and America’s role on the
world stage, but its execution fails to achieve this.
The action sequences are well-choreographed, if not particularly inventive; however, this new film struggles to define itself, feeling more like a checkmark on the list of MCU obligations rather than a compelling standalone story.
One of the film’s biggest flaws is the degree to which the movie relies on the audience’s memory of past projects. Rather than feeling like a fresh start for Mackie, it instead highlights Harrison Ford, taking the spotlight off of its supposed protagonist. This, paired with an overstuffed script credited to five writers, results in a story that feels both dense and undercooked. “Captain America: Brave New World” will disappoint Marvel fans.
