A new project to the White House has sparked debate in Washington D.C, after President Donald Trump announced plans to incorporate a ballroom to the historic building. The demolition has raised the question to many as to why they would start such a large renovation in the middle of a government shutdown.
The ballroom would be the biggest structural change to the White House since 1948, when President Harry S. Truman added the Truman Balcony. Although Trump believes the addition of the ballroom is necessary, Americans say focus should be going to National problems rather than the expansion to the manor.
“It just feels like an unnecessary change,” said Junior Keeley Maloney, “couldn’t that money go to something a little more important?”
The timing of the demolition has also gained attraction from the public, along with where the money could be going. Many have stated that the funds put into the ballroom could have gone to ongoing issues such as homelessness, natural disaster recovery, and environmental damages.
“Isnt there a government shut down,” said Junior Keeley Maloney, “shouldn’t they be more focused on that rather than adding a grand ballroom. What if Trump put some of that money to the billions of dollars worth of reconstruction in the Palisades.”
