Mira Costa softball is turning the page this season with new head coach Mike Mora, whose 35 years of experience and calm leadership style are already inspiring players to work harder and aim high. Mora has coached all levels of competition including high school, college and travel teams, making him well known in the softball community.
“I am excited for the new challenge,” sophomore Lucy Beheshti said.
Currently coaching the USA Athletics 12U team, Mora is known for his quiet demeanor and intellectual teaching style. He hopes to bring out the best in each player as well as guide the team toward victory on and off the field. Both new and returning players are ecstatic about Mora’s leadership and structure he hopes to implement. The team chemistry is already very bold, with players maintaining a “good vibe” amid the coaching change.
“He said himself that we are going to keep on the work, keep grinding as Mira Costa always does,” Beheshti said.
Junior Clara Wilcox noted that Mora’s extensive experience with specifically travel teams brings valuable knowledge to the team. The combination between a safe environment and discipline allows them to focus on improving skills while still having lots of fun.
“We were super excited to find out that our replacement was going to be somebody experienced and who has a lot of knowledge working with travel teams,” Wilcox said.
Players have expressed excitement about working together across both JV and Varsity, emphasizing that coming together as a team will build on the foundation established in previous seasons, improve their abilities and strengthen the bond between everyone.
Mora and the players collaborated to develop a team motto, “Shoot for the stars, land on the moon.”
Wilcox explained that the motto represents the team’s focus on ambitious goals, strong teamwork and embracing new beginnings. The phrase serves as a daily reminder of their commitment to improvement to the game, themselves and each other.
“We want to beat Redondo, anything is possible with our new coach, new beginnings. I think we could really reach for the stars this year,” Wilcox said.
