Mira Costa High School is highly spoken about when it comes to sports. From Volleyball to Football, students feel proud to be able to rep our name. However, with the recent incline in uniform prices, wearing Mira Costa’s name is becoming very expensive for many students.
Sports are meant to be for all, giving students the opportunity to make new bonds, be a part of something, and stay active. But when uniforms start to reach the hundreds bracket, it limits a lot of students from participating, despite the fact Mira Costa is a public school.
”When we were first told to buy our uniforms for track, I did not expect them to be as much as they were,” said Junior Track Athlete Clementine Smith. “I have yet to buy another uniform because I’m already spending so much on shoes.”
Uniforms have become a major burden for those participating in a sport. Every season, many teams require new gear. Multi-sport athletes are having to pay close to three hundred dollars solely on uniforms, not including the cost of accurate shoes, cleats, tennis rackets, etc.
”Im already paying 100 dollars on running shoes and 200 dollars on spikes,” said Junior Track Athlete Keeley Maloney. “I just feel like maybe we should be provided with uniforms, or you make a donation when you receive it.”
The problem doesn’t stem from the fact that students can’t participate, it’s that we are paying hundreds of dollars for a cheap piece of fabric that should be provided or lowered in price.
”The quality of my top and shorts is horrible,” said Smith. “I understand that the sports programs don’t have a ton of funding for stuff like that, but I feel we shouldn’t be paying as much as we are for it.”
The high cost of uniforms has also created added stress for families who are struggling. However, students have found ways around this issue. Solutions Include reusing uniforms, minimizing change in uniform design, and borrowing from a sibling or relative.
