Costa wears purple to support One Love Club

The One Love Club is spreading education and empathy across Costa about domestic violence and abuse.

This newly-founded club aims to educate students on healthy relationships and the signs of abuse by using materials from the One Love Foundation.

“Our goal for the club is to spread awareness about our cause at school, and in the future hopefully be able to bring it outside of Costa,” said junior Peyton Malone, vice president of the club.

One Love Club plans to further expand by partnering with Costa athletic teams and other groups, as well as facilitate game dedications and workshops.

“During workshops and game dedications, we get to teach lessons on healthy relationships,” said junior Carly Kilroy, vice president of One Love club. “In the future we’d love to bring those workshops outside of Costa and to other schools and programs in our community.”

October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the club organized events around campus promoting awareness, including “Wear Purple Day” on October 28, in association with Purple Thursday, a nationwide event where purple is worn across the country to raise awareness about domestic violence.

“We used the loudspeaker announcements, online posts, and club meetings to spread the word,” said senior Sydney Huber, president of One Love Club. “We got hundreds of purple wristbands with the One Love logo printed on them and dispersed them to each of the office hours tables.”

The club wants to broaden their impact by working with shelters to support and work with victims of domestic violence abuse.

“One of our main goals is to collaborate with local women’s shelters,” Huber said. “We plan on fundraising and volunteering at homes such as the 1736 Family Crisis Center and the Alexandria House to reach out to victims of domestic violence or other sources of instability.”

Since the club is new this year, meetings differentiate each week, but are always educational and engaging.

“Our meetings will vary, some of them will be more educational in recognizing the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships, while others will be informative of upcoming events like game dedications or fundraisers,” said Huber. “No matter what, though, we’ll always have sweet treats!”

Through collaborations and multiple avenues of raising awareness, One Love Club is helping Costa advance in knowledge and empathy, around the topic.

“We aim to educate our broader community about healthy relationships and help build a more empathetic, supportive, and respectful environment both at Costa and beyond,” said Huber.
