One of Mira Costa Drama/Tech Department’s most anticipated events of the year, Senior Scenes, is coming up next month in the small theater. The production will showcase 13 acts which are fully student directed and produced, and for the first time, there will be two performances on May 20 and 21.
The department decided to add a second performance of Senior Scenes after the event sold out last year, and many were turned away at the door. Crowds piled into the small theater to see the work created and executed by their friends and classmates.
“Outside of drama there are so many people participating in Senior Scenes,” said senior and co-director of Six Jaxon Stroyke. “It’s an opportunity for them to get on stage and just have fun,” said senior and co-director of Six Alayna van de Ven.
Some students performing in the production are involved in the Drama/Tech department, while others come from Costa programs including Model United Nations (MUN), cheer, choir, and dance, just to name a few. This annual event demonstrates how the arts can unite a student body and bring people together.
“It’s fully student run,” Stroyke said. “It’s insanely creative and everyone’s scenes are so good.” The scenes selected by this year’s graduating class include cuts from Chicago, Six, Into the Woods, and The Greatest Showman. The production will showcase musical numbers consisting of complex choreography, intricate vocals, and powerful dialogue and scene work.
Student directors began the preparation process at the beginning of the school year, but some have had their scenes planned dating back to their freshman year. Auditions were held in Jan. of this year and cast lists were released immediately after. Many groups began rehearsing at this time as well, which marked the beginning of a five-month process.
“We had been planning our scene since freshman year,” said ven de Van. “Personally I think Senior Scenes is the best Drama/Tech event in the year,” Stroyke said. “I think you should come see it because it showcases and highlights everybody and it’s a show that you can’t get bored watching.”
