A man riding an electric bicycle was seriously injured on Jan. 12th after being struck by a vehicle on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Hermosa Beach. The collision occurred around 7 p.m near the 1800 block of PCH. Police officers responded to reports of a traffic collision and identified the victim as a man in his 50s suffering serious injuries.

Emergency services transported him to a nearby hospital where he remained in serious condition. According to a CBS News report, investigators determined that the crash happened when a driver traveling north on PCH swerved into the center lane to avoid colliding with stopped traffic. During that swerve, the vehicle struck the e-bike rider.

“As the driver swerved, he struck a man in his 50s who was riding an e-bike,” Hermosa Beach police said, according to CBS News. Police also stated that the driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. As of now, no arrests have been made.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to determine whether any other factors contributed to the crash. PCH was shut down for several hours following the collision while officers and traffic investigators worked at the scene. The closure caused traffic delays in the area Monday night.

The crash highlights ongoing safety concerns involving e-bikes on major roadways, like PCH, which is frequently used for transportation via vehicles and bicycles. E-bikes have become increasingly popular in the South Bay due to their convenience and accessibility, but their use on busy roads raises questions about traffic safety and driver awareness.

The Hermosa Beach Police Department has not released the identity of the injured rider and no further updates on his condition have been provided. The investigation remains open and ongoing.
