Founded in 1975, the iconic Mexican restaurant, El Sombrero, is officially celebrating 50 years in Manhattan Beach. According to community members, El Sombrero constantly works to create a warm, family-like atmosphere for local residents. Whether it’s an after-school snack, a post-beach lunch, or a fun dinner with friends or family, El Sombrero remains a beloved restaurant for members of the South Bay.
As the community celebrates this milestone, Lamas reflects on El Sombrero’s origins “The original founder of El Sombrero is Areg Ahbramian.” Says Lamas, “In 1975, Areg began his own restaurant business, El Sombrero. It was a small establishment; Areg’s next step was to hire employees, starting with my father Felipe Lamas.”
The early years of El Sombrero not only helped their operations but also shaped their warm and welcoming atmosphere which would later define the restaurant and lead it to success.
“Over the years, El Sombrero has become more than just a place to eat, it’s become a part of people’s lives. Many of our regulars grew up eating here, and now they bring their own children.” Lamas adds, “We’ve always tried to treat everyone like family, greeting customers by name and remembering their favorite dishes. The restaurant has also supported local schools and community events whenever possible, whether through donations, catering, or simply being a space where people can come together.” Says Lamas, “I think that’s why El Sombrero feels like home to so many—it’s built on relationships, it’s not just a restaurant.”
The El Sombrero owner shares his hopes for the restaurant’s future. He hopes that the restaurant will remain successful and that the traditions built over the past 50 years will continue to guide the restaurant’s role in the community for current customers and for generations to come.
“My hope is that El Sombrero continues to serve the community with the same love and dedication that it always has. I would like to see it remain a place where families can gather, share a meal, and feel at home.”
“The world changes, but good food, hospitality and building relationships never go out of style. If El Sombrero can keep making people feel welcome for another fifty years, then I’ll know that my father, Areg, and I did something right.” This inspirational story from Jose Lamas shines a light on the El Sombrero story and how big of an impact it has made on the Manhattan Beach community.
As El Sombrero celebrates 50 years in Manhattan Beach, its impact is seen through its numerous loyal customers. The restaurant’s long lasting success reflects its delicious food, outstanding service, and small-town charm.
