What started as curiosity about the psychology of scents evolved into the Sunny Fragrances business—Mokhtari’s handcrafted line of organic perfumes designed to boost mood and support teen girls’ mental health. Every blend is created with the same idea: scents should make you feel as good as you smell.
“Sunny is a clean fragrance company designed to empower and uplift teen girls with scents created to evoke positive moods and emotions,” Mokhtari said. “Our fragrances are crafted with organic plant and flower essences with neuroscience-backed benefits designed to boost confidence, happiness, relaxation, and energy.”
For Mokhtari, the link between scent and mindset was personal. She had always noticed how certain fragrances lifted her spirits. What surprised her was how many popular perfumes contain hormone disruptors connected to health problems like early puberty and reproductive issues—a flaw she couldn’t accept.
“Sunny was inspired by my love of fragrance and my passion for positive mental health,” Mokhtari reflected. “I’ve always noticed how scent can shift your mood. I wanted to create something that not only smells amazing, but is actually good for you—something that makes you feel supported.”
Making her vision a reality required diving into deep research. Mokhtari has learned the practical and commercial aspects of running a fragrance business and has come to perfect her one-person production.
“I carefully blend, bottle, and label each product myself to ensure quality and consistency,” Mokhtari said. “As the business grows, I plan to partner with a clean beauty-certified manufacturer to help scale production while maintaining our standards.”
Mokhtari’s attention to detail didn’t stop at ingredients. She designed every aspect of the business to fit her larger goal of uplifting and empowering young women. According to her, her favorite part of creating Sunny’s self-confidence-based brand was designing the logo and packaging.
“It’s a simple and clean aesthetic that reflects our commitment to ingredient transparency,” Mokhtari said. “To further emphasize our dedication to supporting teen girls’ mental health, I added positive affirmations to our packaging, such as ‘Hey, Beautiful’ and ‘You are stronger than you think,’ serving as daily reminders of confidence and self-empowerment.”
Mokhtari has large aspirations for her business, in particular partnering with large retailers including Sephora and Target. For now, she’s focused on connecting with customers directly and spreading the optimism that inspired Sunny’s namesake.
“I chose the name Sunny because it perfectly captures the feeling I want every girl to have when they wear our fragrance—bright, confident, and full of joy,” Mokhtari said. “To me, ‘Sunny’ represents optimism, warmth, and light, even on hard days. It’s a name that feels positive, and it reflects our mission to support teen girls’ mental health and help them feel good from the inside out.”
Mokhtari has made a point of always preserving the original spirit of mental health and wellness. Sunny has been able to give back to teen girls’ mental health locally and nationally through programs like Allcove Beach Cities, Beach Cities Health District, and Girls Inc.
The feel-good side of running a business is what keeps Mokhtari going.
“My favorite part is seeing how something I created can make people feel good,” Mokhtari said. “Whether it’s someone loving a scent, connecting with our message, or seeing the results through our mental health partnerships. I also love the creativity, from designing the bottles to crafting new blends. It’s a way for me to express myself while hopefully making a difference.”
