When 2014 Mira Costa football alumnus Jahlani Tavai took the field for the New England Patriots at the Superbowl, he represented a legacy that began at Costa long before his NFL career.
Although fans now see a 6’3”, 258-pound linebacker competing at the highest level of football, his journey at Costa looked very different. He built his reputation not on size, but on relentless competitiveness and heart. After graduating from Costa, Tavai continued his career at the University of Hawaii, where he became a standout linebacker and earned All-Mountain West honors.
“Jahlani was never the biggest growing up; actually he was most times the smallest in the family,” said 2018 Costa alumnus, Jonah Tavai, Jahlani’s younger brother. “What separated him from his peers was his undying effort not to lose to anyone, and that competitiveness pushed him to where he is now. Even entering Costa at 150 pounds, it didn’t stop him from playing with heart and grit. It’s just something you can’t teach.”
That effort-over-circumstance mindset is what Jonah believes defines his brother’s legacy at Costa. While many remember him as the star, his family and those closest to him remember the sacrifices behind his success.
“Most people who see Jahlani see this linebacker blessed with great size and athleticism, but those who have known my family and seen his hard work and dedication know how much he sacrificed to be where he is right now,” Jahlani said. “He is the epitome of hard work over talent, showing how far diligence in your work ethic can take you.”
Even after reaching the NFL, Jahlani has remained connected to his roots, as he continues to invest time in the Costa football community and inspire current student-athletes.
“He still comes back to talk to current students and has participated in alumni events, but hearing kids ask me what he did to get to the NFL and the Super Bowl shows that he is someone athletes at Costa look up to,” Jahlani said. “At Costa, he represents a symbol of hope in the community.”
