The Mustangs begin the 2025 season with a record of 11-7 and a ranking of 24th in the country and 6th in California. Looking to continue their momentum alive in League play. Costa battled through a slow start against the Tritons of Palos Verdes, ultimately securing a 3-1 victory on the road.

Costa dropped the first set 16-25 after struggling to match the energy of the Tritons. Palos Verdes started the game off hot, bringing a lot of energy that the Mustangs weren’t able to match, according to Senior outside hitter Simon Roslon.

“We didn’t have the intensity in the first set that we needed,” Roslon said. “We normally start games with a lot of energy and hustle and we weren’t able to get that flowing.”

The Mustangs regrouped in the second set and began to build momentum with more communication and better execution. Costa narrowly defeated them 25-21. According to Senior Setter Reese Stringer, the key was staying focused and limiting their errors.

“The key for us was to continue playing as a team, bringing more energy and staying loud throughout the match,” Stringer said. “We are a talented team and when we focus on our side of the net, things become much easier.”

From here, Costa took control of the match. Costa won the third 25-20 created separation leading into the final set of the match. The fourth set was just continued building of the previous sets as they began to pull away from the Tritons with a score 25-16. Costa capitalized with a 3-1 victory, boasting them to 2-0 in making them one step closer to their goal of winning the Bay League in back to back season.

“We know what it takes to win the Bay League and it starts each day at practice, continuing to get better as a team,” Roslon said. “This team has a lot of returning players that are used to the high pressure moments, and we all know what it takes to win, so we just need to continue executing.”
