In recent months, Southern California has been experiencing a heat wave. There have been unusually high temperatures around the area. As an outdoor school, Costa students felt this heat.
The heat wave started inland, and slowly drifted to the coast in areas around Manhattan Beach, affecting Mira Costa High School students. This was caused by a high pressure surrounding the area, trapping in heat along the coast. “Starting near the coast around September 4 and then building inland, the heat raised daytime temperatures 10-20 degrees above normal for this time of year,” said Climate.gov.
Although temperatures aren’t as intense along the coast as they are inland, students here at Mira Costa felt the effects of the heat, especially during the end of summer and throughout the first couple weeks of school. The heat
was especially noticeable during lunch or after school. In classrooms with insufficient air conditioning, the heat is even more apparent. Heat waves are not only a problem for Costa students, but also for the entire South Bay and beyond, putting stress on peoples’ everyday lives, school lives, and work lives.
“I have definitely been noticing the hotter temperatures recently, especially towards the end of August and somewhat in September. I think the warm the weather is nice, but occasionally temperatures got really high during our lunches and snack breaks,” said Costa junior Annabel Krikorian.
