This month, Hermosa Beach is set to complete the significant project to improve the greenbelt, enhancing accessibility for residents, visitors, and the community along the newly upgraded 1,600-foot section of the pathway from Pier Avenue to Eighth Street.
One of the key changes is the replacement of the current wood chip trail with decomposed granite, which will provide a smoother, more stable surface for walkers and those using wheelchairs.
In addition, the project will include upgrades to curb ramps, sidewalks, and drainage systems. New landscaping and the installation of fitness equipment at both ends of the greenbelt will also be included to further enhance the space.
The greenbelt project has a budget exceeding $1 million, including an $850,000 contract and a $170,000 insurance fund. As the project nears completion, the city is considering renaming the greenbelt. A committee, made up of city staff, Parks and Recreation Commissioners, and council members, will meet to discuss potential name changes, ensuring the greenbelt remains an important part of the community for years to come.
“We’re making this special place more inclusive,” said Hermosa Beach Mayor Dean Francois. “Ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to connect with nature and one another.’
