Costa junior Krish Desai distance runner shattered a six-year-old school record in the 1600m, running a time of 4:09.85, surpassing former Costa student Xavier Court’s, personal record of 4:10.94.
The performance marks a significant moment in Costa’s track and field history. With this time, Desai now ranks 13th in California and 32nd in the United States overall. Among juniors, the mark places him 4th in California and 8th in the nation.
“This brings our program in a positive direction,” Desai said. “I believe my record will be broken in a few years, and the team as a whole will keep improving.”
Desai credits his consistent weekly workouts and ability to stay healthy for the recent leap in his performance. He notes that the 11-second drop from his sophomore year time didn’t happen by chance, rather by his determination to improve.
“The mindset was to try and win against a very competitive field, “ Desai explained. “I knew that I could hang with some of those guys and knew that a fast time would come if I just raced to win.”
According to Desai, throughout the season his teammates have been a constant source of motivation, pushing him in workouts, holding him accountable, and creating a competitive yet supportive environment that made him work harder every day. Their dedication and drive played a key role in helping him reach this milestone, and he hopes their shared success continues to raise the bar for the program.
“The team atmosphere is always very supportive during meets and training,” said Desai. “During training all the guys always want each other to PR and perform good.”
Desai also praised Costa distance-running coaches Hunter and Dan for designing a strong training plan and offering effective race strategies leading up to the meet. Looking forward, his junior-year goals include further improving his time and competing for a state championship in May. With league finals and postseason ahead, he’s confident there’s still more he has to give.
“I feel like I can definitely run faster this season,” said Desai. “I have been improving a lot and definitely have more left, I just need to keep training and stay healthy.”
