Teen entrepreneurship at Costa is no longer seen only in business classes and after school clubs, but on also Spotify and Apple Music. Costa junior Seraphina Sanan is turning her lifelong passion for music into a professional career while juggling academics, friendships, and life as a typical high schooler.
Sanan’s journey began in Chicago, where she attended the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA), a talent competition where casting agents find new clients. Doing well at IMTA allowed her to dive deeper into the entertainment industry. From there, her passion grew into something more serious.
“I always knew I wanted to do something with music,” said Sanan. “It never stopped.”
Her father, who owns a record label and acts as her unofficial manager, has helped her release dozens of songs. She is not only signed with her fathers label, but also partners with Universal Music Group to put out certain songs.
“My favorite part of recording music is listening to the finished product, because it shows all the hard work my team and I put into it.” said Sanan.
Sanan transferred to Costa for the 2024-2025 school year, and she balances school work, her budding career, and involvement in the Drama/Tech club. Although she is now thriving at Costa, her path has not always been smooth. When her career began to gain traction in Chicago, the reaction from peers at her old school was not entirely supportive.
“I think they were jealous,” Sanan said. “It affected my mental health a lot.”
Sanan focused on her ambition and making it big one day to get her through the hard times. She also uses their negative behavior to inspire her songwriting.
“Music is commonly about standing up to others, and I have personal experience with that.” said Sanan.
That experience pushed her to keep her music separate from her school life. At Costa, the larger student body gives her some space.
“Maybe there are people talking behind my back now, but it feels like a lot less.”
Despite challenges, Seraphina remains focused on the future. She plans to pursue musical theater in college, continue releasing music, and possibly take the stage this summer for her first live performance.
Her message for aspiring teen entrepreneurs and entertainers at Costa is simple and honest; “Dream big, but don’t get too disappointed if something doesn’t work out. It takes time, but the journey is worth it.” Sanan said.
