With AP testing around the corner, Costa’s Link Crew offers a breather for students through the annual Costachella event hosted during office hours. Through leis, beaded necklaces, and festive activities, Link Crew members give the study body an extra push through April and May in a spirited Thursday afternoon.
An annual event beginning in 2018, Link Crew has grown with each passing year, evolving into a signature event that Link Crew puts on. Junior Link Crew member Elizabeth Witherelle helped out with the Dream Wall, posters had been set up for students to answer questions on sticky notes.
“I think it’s a good way to get students engaged in the event and look forward to summer,” Witherelle said. “It’s a really fun event that Link Crew works hard on preparing.”
Link Crew’s tote-bag-making station was chosen to complement the theme for this year’s Costachella: Summer Preview. The station gave students the chance to personalize something of their own and to look ahead to a summer of relaxation and time to recharge. Junior? Gianna Goodman-Bhyat and her friends worked at the jellybean booth, where a jar of jellybeans was placed for participants to guess how many jellybeans there were.
“I just remembered when I was in second grade, there was a fair at my school that had a jar of jellybeans. I guessed it right and it was the best day of my life,” Goodman-Bhyat said.
Seniors Alyssa Arizpe and Ava Schauwecker hosted a Pin the Pineapple booth, handing out for students to wear for the rest Thursday. In the midst of college decisions and testing stress, seniors continue to take part in a lasting Mira Costa tradition and wrap up their time with Link Crew.
“I picked this booth since we should encourage people to have more school spirit,” Arizpe said. A quick game of Pin the Pineapple gave students tickets which were then exchanged for food and lemonade.
Whether they were running booths or serving drinks, Link Crew members laid at the heart of the day’s energy. Senior Catherine Humbarger sold lemonade for Link Crew and helped students escape from the usual school day. In the end, these efforts not only provided a break from class and AP-study cramming, but a celebration of the Costa community.
