The Manhattan Beach City Council held a ceremony on Apr. 1 to recognize the outstanding achievements of Costa’s competitive cheer team during the 2024-2025 season. The athletes were commended for their positive representation of Costa and the Manhattan Beach community.
The team was honored for being the first ever winners of the CIF cheerleading state championships in MCHS history. City officials, community members, and family and friends of the cheerleaders attended the event. The memorable occasion highlighted the importance of youth sports in the community.
“I want everyone to understand, these women are student-athletes and to do what they do requires time management, it requires commitment, it requires sacrifice,” said Manhattan Beach mayor Amy Howorth. “[The cheerleaders] have made us all very proud, and I am delighted to honor [them] this season.”
At the ceremony, Mayor Howorth invited the girls to the front of the room to perform a cheer routine. Each girl was then individually awarded for their contributions.
“I think all of the girls, including me, on this team are very grateful to see that our hard work and dedication is being seen and acknowledged,” said senior and cheerleader Tessa Lukas. “We are all very grateful for the city council hall coming together and taking the time to recognize us.”
With 34 total athletes, the competitive team attended the National High School Cheerleading Championships along with the CIF Championships, where they placed 5th in the traditional division and 6th in the gameday division.
“It was so fun winning CIFs, we worked so hard all season, and winning was just so gratifying,” said senior and Varsity captain Gabby Coelho. “It was a great way to end my cheer career at Costa, and I can’t wait to see my friends in younger grades thrive next year.”
Each girl on the team received a certificate of acknowledgment signed by Mayor Howorth and a pin for their major achievements. this past season.
