Minecraft Movie brings childhood to life

Released on April 4, 2025, The Minecraft Movie brought the iconic video game to life on the big screen. From the start, it was clear the film would be a hit thanks to the enduring popularity of Minecraft and a star-studded cast featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa.

The story follows four misfits, Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, played by Jason Momoa, siblings Henry and Natalie, and estate agent and mobile zoo owner Dawn, who are transported into the Overworld, a land built entirely of cubes and teeming with imagination. There, they meet Steve (Jack Black), an expert crafter, and together they embark on a quest to stop the evil piglin ruler, Malgosha, from using the powerful Orb of Dominance to conquer both the Overworld and the real world, according to Wikipedia.

The storyline is both entertaining and fast-paced, keeping kids and teens engaged from start to finish. Vibrant colors, a variety of animated characters both true to and creatively adapted from the original game and the impressive attention to detail in the scenery all add to the film’s visual appeal.

In the village scene, a pig wearing a distinctive crown ran past the group. One of the characters asked, “Is that a king?” to which Steve replied, “No, that’s a legend.” This crowned pig was a heartfelt tribute to Technoblade, a beloved Minecraft content creator known for his iconic crowned pig avatar. Technoblade sadly passed away from cancer in 2022, and this moment in the film served as a subtle but powerful homage, highlighting the filmmakers’ thoughtful attention to the Minecraft community and its heroes.

While the Minecraft Movie has gained positive feedback, its release has sparked inappropriate behavior from younger audiences. Large groups of teens have been causing chaos in the theaters, it’s gone as far as sneaking a live chicken into the cinema. Various actions such as jumping up and down, yelling, and violently throwing popcorn have become common amongst these groups. It can be compared to a concert-like atmosphere, mainly showcased through Steve’s famous line: “I am Steve.”

This behavior has led to theatres threatening to kick out entire audiences, along with posting up signs reading “save the drama for the screen,” seen at Cineplex. Still, fans still see the yelling and shouting as part of the excitement, making the experience memorable. The promotion of the movie has even reached non-minecraft players, proving the movie is so much more than an adaption, but a way to bring people together

The aroma of the Minecraft Movie proves just how much the game truly meant to fans. The engaging storyline, heartwarming tributes, and cheering crowds have brought in a whole new fan base to Minecraft. Along with the actors featured and comedic reliefs seen throughout the movie has people yearning to see the film. On top of that, the genius marketing, specifically the Minecraft Meal by Mcdonalds, has helped build up the excitement of the movie in a gurastic manner.

”The movie had such great actors, and all of them fit their character really well,” said sophomore Keeley Maloney. “It’s as if they weren’t even acting. The sound track was also amazing, and worked with the scene perfectly.”
