On October 7, during students’ third period classes, Mira Costa held the diversity assembly in order to spread awareness about cultures, diversity, and student experiences. The event featured a range of different student speakers that highlighted the importance of inclusion and representation on campus.
Students were able to share about their own personal experiences or situations they have witnessed during their time here at Costa, offering insight to their peers and staff. These stories helped raise awareness about issues on campus that many may not have recognized prior to the assembly.
“I think by having this assembly, students that have faced these issues with diversity and bias realize they aren’t alone in what’s happening and that it’s important to reach out about what’s happening or to stop it if they do see it because this is stuff that goes on at Costa and people don’t really realize it,” said Kaileen Neuberger, a senior who spoke out about mental health at the assembly.
This assembly took some brave students to come up in front of their own peers and speak about issues like these. Each year it is always worth it because of how much more educated it makes students on topics that are easy to ignore. Student speakers were able to provide strategies for what to do when found in a situation hurtful to someone around them or even themselves.
