Pardon Our Take

Welcome back, Mustangs, to Pardon Our Take. Winter sports are closing out, CIF is around the corner, and somehow, excuses are already being made for why we didn’t win.
Starting off with a fan favorite. Rugby. They’re not even listed on MaxPreps, so the question has to be asked, do they even count as a real sport? They’re out there tackling each other in mud, bruised from head to toe, and still can’t get a box score posted. If a game is played and MaxPreps doesn’t record it, did it even happen?
Speaking of sports that don’t even exist, MBYB. Some may call it a league. Others call it… a second chance. Let’s be honest, MBYB has become the unofficial plan B for Costa basketball hopefuls. Didn’t make the team? No worries. There’s always MBYB where the competition is questionable, the gyms are always empty, and everyone swears they would have made the Costa team if they had two more inches on them.
Now for some actual receipts.
• Girls Water Polo: 13-16 – Self explanatory.
• Boys Soccer: 9-4 – Somehow went 0-2 against PV.
• Girls Soccer: 14-3 – Carrying the winter season on their backs.
• Boys Basketball: 22-4 – Maybe they’ll actually pull through this year and not lose in the Finals.
• Girls Basketball: 13-10 – It’s tough out there.
But let’s be real. The toughest, most cutthroat, emotionally draining sport on campus isn’t even sanctioned by CIF. It is Senior Assassin. This year, the price of entry has doubled, with the pot jumping to $2000 after switching to a $5 per person buy-in instead of per pair. Inflation has officially hit Costa. Also, apparently there’s now a cap on players, meaning some seniors will be eliminated before the game even starts. Tragic. Let’s just hope this year the person running it doesn’t step down halfway through the game.
That being said, here are the top five Super Bowl lies we all tell:
1. I’ve been a fan of (team that’s currently in the lead) since I was little.
2. I’m only here for the game (more like only here for Bad Bunny).
3. I watched every regular season game.
4. Someone paid off the ref.
5. That’s PI ref, call the flag.
