Pennies Phase Out as Costs Climb

pennies

As of recent news, the Government has released the info that Pennies will no longer be in production for the new year to come. This has been a shock for many people, like those who still use coins to pay for parking when needed, and of no suprise to the ones behind the scenes.

However, according to CNBC network, “The penny isn’t discontinued and still counts as legal tender, and the final batch is expected to enter circulation in early 2026.”

Coins, especially pennies, have declined signifigantly in their usage over the last decade, with the introduction of new technologies like Apply Pay, and the signifigant use of Debit and Credit cards for most, if not all, purchases. Yet, as of now, pennies are declining more than any coin because of their minor value compared to other coins.

The production cost of pennies is found to cost more than an actual penny, making it pointless to make without any profit, only losing money. According to U.S. Mint, over the past decade, the Mint’s cost to produce each penny has climbed from 1.42 cents to 3.69 cents. This is one of, if not the main reason for the ending of the production of the Penny.

While the discontinuation of the penny production will begin, some might feel connected or that an old memory in their life will fade if it ties to a penny, but the economic standard of our lives are gradually changing, and this will help reduce costs and useless weight carried around on the daily.
