While most seniors at Costa are preparing to move out of Manhattan Beach for college, senior Roman Primrose intends to pursue a different path.

Primrose, a student with a deep passion for technology and computer science, plans on joining the U.S. Space Force’s cybersecurity program instead of heading to college.

“I’ve always been into computers and all the systems behind it,” said Primrose. “I started learning cyber security programming sophomore year.”

Primrose found himself considering his future path when he thought about his interests and passions, educational opportunities, and the experience that would come with taking a unique route. Primrose’s plan to prepare himself for applying to the space force was to independently gain as much work and education experience as possible.

“My thought process for this different kind of path was being able to get a high education and notable work experience in the span of a couple years,” said Primrose.

For many students, making the decision to not go to college straight after high school can come with mental and social pressure from family and friends. While there are certain traditional college experiences that Primrose may miss out on, he believes the direct path he is taking will help him achieve his personal ultimate goals better than any four year college plan.

“The college experience seems cool, but the only thing I’m really gonna miss is my friends moving away,” said Primrose.

Primrose is confident in his decision because he knows the long-term benefits that come with it, such as stability, the opportunity to build a career while gaining valuable real life experience, and not having to deal with the burden of financial strain or academic pressure that can come with attending a 4 year college.

“The job is just a 9-5. Having free housing, insurance, education at most schools [in my field], and getting to see the world with people from everywhere is great,” said Primrose. “I take pride in serving the country, too.”
