A new restaurant has made its way to the Hermosa Beach Pier, bringing with it a tropical escape that feels thousands of miles from the South Bay. Tiki Kai, the 17th tiki bar to open in Los Angeles, offers guests a vibrant blend of island inspired food, cocktails and immersive decor that transports customers the moment they walk through the door.
The space Tiki Kai now occupies has seen several transitions over the years. It was once Mediterraneo, followed by the short lived Brews Hall. After so many changes, locals have gotten used to seeing new concepts rotate in and out. But with its detailed theming, lively energy and exotic menu, Tiki Kai feels like the first restaurant in years that’s built to last.
From the outside, warm lighting, bamboo accents and the bright sign hint at the tropical atmosphere inside. Once indoors, guests are met with carved wooden tikis, glowing lanterns, palm patterned walls and dim ambient lighting that makes the space feel like a beachside hideaway tucked far away from Hermosa.
The staff brings an upbeat and welcoming attitude, reinforcing the laid back island theme from the moment guests sit down. Servers offer enthusiastic recommendations from the menu, which highlights Hawaiian and Polynesian inspired dishes with bold, layered flavors.
During my visit, I tried several dishes, each one showcasing the restaurant;s commitment to flavor and presentation. The Huli Huli Chicken was tender and smoky, glazed with a sweet-savory sauce. The Sticky Ribs were fall off the bone soft, coated in a rich glaze that balanced sweetness with a bit of heat.’
Other standout dishes include the Garlic Noodles, which were full of flavor and the Veggie Fried Rice which was fresh and generously portioned. The Crispy Rice, topped with spicy yellowtail tuna had a satisfying crunch, which the Furikake Fries were a surprising favorite, lightingly crispy, salty and coated in a seasoning that made them hard to stop eating.
The drink menu adds to the immersive experience, featuring handcrafted tiki cocktails served in decorative cups that match the restaurant;s vibrant theme. Each drink combines tropical flavors, fresh fruit and eye-catching presentation.
Atmosphere plays a huge role in Tiki Kai’s appeal. With its warm lighting, carved details and immersive decor, the restaurant feels more like a themed experience than a meal. The lively music, colorful dishes and attention to detail make the restaurants feel energetic and transportive.
Tiki Kai offers indoor seating, outdoor seating and a full bar, though the space fills quickly on weekend evenings. Reservations are recommended for larger parties or peak houses, especially as the restaurant gains attention from locals and tourists.
Overall, Tiki Kai brings a refreshing and lively addition to the Hermosa Pier dining scene. With its unique atmosphere, flavorful menu and friendly service, the restaurant succeeds in creating an island style escape right on the beach.
