Trump’s tarrifs sinking economy

This year, people noticed something tough: prices for everyday stuff went up because of tariffs Donald Trump put in place when he became president. Trump used these tariffs, taxes on goods coming from other countries like China, in an attempt to help American businesses and jobs. Now, though, those higher costs are hitting shoppers hard.

Back when Trump was in charge, he added tariffs on things like steel, aluminum, electronics, and clothes between 2018 and 2020. He said it would make things fairer for U.S. companies and cut down on buying from other countries. Critics warned it would raise prices for regular people, and that’s what’s happening now. On Liberation Day, shoppers saw higher costs for things like appliances and decorations, which still use a lot of imported parts.

Stores all over said prices jumped before the holiday because of Trump’s tariffs. A worker at an electronics store said tariffs on parts from China made wholesale prices go up by 15% in the last year. “We tried to keep costs down,” they said, “but now customers are paying more.” Car makers and clothing stores said the same thing, stuff from other countries just costs more now.

For lots of people, the higher prices took some joy out of Liberation Day. In Ohio, a woman named Lynda Carter was mad while looking at TVs. “I want jobs here, but this feels like it’s hurting us,” she said, seeing a $700 price that was $100 more than last year. Many families feel stuck with wages that don’t grow while prices keep climbing.

Trump’s fans say the tariffs were worth it. At a Liberation Day event in Florida, a small business owner said they helped bring back some U.S. jobs, like in steel. “We’re making more here now,” he said. But even those who like the tariffs admit it’s tough on shoppers, not just the foreign countries Trump wanted to challenge.

Looking ahead, these price hikes could matter in the future elections. With people already upset about inflation, the tariffs give both sides something to argue about. For now, shoppers are stuck dealing with it. Liberation Day was supposed to be about America’s strength, but it showed how tough things can get when prices go up.

At the end of the day, it felt strange how a holiday about freedom came with a reminder of costs tied to Trump’s old plans. People still debate if the tariffs were a smart move or a mistake.
