The design flaws in the food storage industry have given it a reputation filled with stale food and bad omen. But freshman Simon Uslaner has found the solution with his creation, Nyft Strip. The product helps reseal packaged snacks after opening, guaranteeing freshness in every bite.
According to Uslaner, he created his product by first considering the best features in competitors’ products, such as Ziploc, the Chip Clip, and the Re Zip. He then synthesized benefits from each into his own design, creating a new and improved product.
“[Food storage] is obviously a very large market,” Uslaner said. “But I wanted to create a best-of-all-worlds product. The Nyft Strip combines qualities from other food storing solutions.”
The Nyft Strip consists of a magnetic clip that intuitively latches around the openings of bags of chips, candy, and other packaged foods. Uslaner described the product as sleek in appearance and simple to use.
“The design uses magnetic properties to hug around the top of open bags and seal them,” Uslaner said. “This closure is simple and easy to use and can really help prevent food waste.”
Uslaner prides his new business on its commitment to sustainability. He says that creating an environmentally friendly product was one of the focal points he kept in mind while building the fully reusable Nyft Strip.
“One big thing that I noticed was how wasteful plastic zip bags are,” Uslaner said. “I did not like how those types of bags fall short in reusability.”
According to Uslaner, portions of his profits made from sales of the Nyft Strip will also go to charity. He hopes that the product will allow him to improve food security in the Los Angeles area, as he plans to donate a percentage of his profits to the LA Regional Food Bank.
“My goal is not mainly to establish myself as a competitor in the food storage solution space,” Uslaner said. “I want to bring light to the food waste issue and make a difference in the community. I hope to open discourse around issues that we have in America and in the world today surrounding the food market and how wasteful eating habits affect people in the world.”
