As of March 4, 2025, three episodes of “The White Lotus” Season 3 have aired, transporting viewers to the beautiful setting of the Four Seasons Koh Samui in Thailand. This season continues the series’ tradition of satirical storytelling, diving into the underbelly of the wealthy and revealing their true colors.
Season 3 has been praised for its darker, more patient storytelling approach, complemented by an amazing cast. The season’s moodiness and depth have been highlighted as strengths, although some critics note the continuation of certain established weaknesses from previous seasons.
Season 1, set in Hawaii, introduced the series’ signature combination of dark humor and social commentary, focusing on the interactions between wealthy guests and hotel staff.
Season 2, located in Sicily, expanded on the show’s themes, diving deeper into the characters’ personal lives and moral ambiguities. Jennifer’ Coolidge’s character, Tanya McQuoid, was unfortunately killed off at the end of the show’s second season, upsetting many fans. Yet director Mike White told Variety Magazine “her death was crucial for the storyline of season 3”.
In the the second episode of the third season, we meet Chloe’s wealthy but much older partner, Gary, who is the spitting image of Gregg McQuoid, Coolidge’s ex-husband in the show. Many fans believe that Gregg is back to stir up more trouble this season, using the name Gary to hide his dark past.
Season 3 offers a new handful of wealthy guests who are hiding dark secrets under the surface. The Ratliff family, Tim, Victoria, Saxon, Piper, and Lochlan, are a wealthy family from North Carolina who traveled to Thailand for Piper’s college thesis on Buddhism. But as the season begins, Tim is always disappearing on mysterious phone calls from “work”. His family begins to question if everything is really okay.
Next to enter the show are Kate, Laurie, and Jaqueline. A trio of best friends who decided to reunite after years of not seeing each other by taking a trip to Thailand. Yet as the season begins to unfold, their sweet and friendly interactions take a turn as the girls begin to converse with one another behind each other’s backs.
The season’s third and final main characters are Chelsea and Rick. A couple with a large age gap yet great banter and chemistry with one another. Rick is grumpy and short tempered yet Chelsea is young, bubbly and immensely kind. Although the two’s personalities are polar opposites, fans are shocked at how much they love them together. But Rick is not here for a vacation. He is looking for something or better yet, someone.
Season 3 of “The White Lotus” takes the show in a darker, more dramatic direction. While it keeps the themes of wealth, privilege, and human flaws, it leans less on satire and more on deep character struggles. The new setting in Thailand adds a different backdrop, and the cast delivers strong performances. Some fans may miss the sharp humor of past seasons, but this one offers a slower, moodier take on the series. Whether it pays off in the long run will depend on how the rest of the season unfolds.
