After a week of Homecoming festivities from Oct. 15-19, including week-long dress up days, a pie-eating contest and a pep rally to excite the school for the Homecoming football game, seniors Jack Hadley and Rachel Humphrey were chosen as the 2012 Homecoming King and Queen.

Hadley and Humphrey were chosen from the 12 Homecoming Court nominees. In addition to participating in games at lunch, court members had to dress up as toys, Disney characters, food, games and football players or cheerleaders throughout Homecoming week.

“I did not expect to win,” Humphrey said. “It was such a memorable moment, and I am so grateful for the whole experience.”

Associated Student Body encouraged students to participate in Homecoming week by wearing a different outfit each day. The spirit days were Flannel Fun Day Monday, L.A. Team Tuesday, USA Wednesday, “PJ” Thursday and Stampede Friday.

“The dress-up days were interesting,” ASB President and Homecoming Court nominee Dillon Shambaugh said. “I had to wear some pretty revealing clothing, but overall it was a blast.”

ASB also held a pep rally on Oct. 19 with an extended lunch schedule, in which each grade cheered for its six representatives in a relay race. The dance, cheer and song team performed in a western dance, and the Homecoming Court also danced.

“It was awesome being in the pep rally, especially seeing teachers wrapped in toilet paper,” sophomore Eden Marquis said.

After riding around the track in cars during halftime of Friday night’s football game against Peninsula High, ASB announced Hadley and Humphrey as Homecoming King and Queen and gave them crowns and flowers.

“I was honored to be elected by my classmates,” Hadley said. “I was thrilled to win.”

Although only one boy and one girl were crowned, other nominees still enjoyed being involved.

“Homecoming was one of my greatest memories at Costa,” nominee Lauren Fournell said. “I felt like I was living a dream.”

The following night, ASB held the “Sweet Escape” Homecoming dance. ASB decorated the gym with candy-themed decorations and fog machines.

“My favorite part about the Homecoming dance was either the dancing or the flip books that they gave us to do,” sophomore Carly Cohen said. “I think they did a great job decorating, although I do wish they had more food available because it all went by quickly.”

Students felt that Homecoming week was a success in showing off Costa’s school pride.

“Homecoming week is always my favorite time at Costa,” junior Estefania Freire said. “I can’t wait for next year.”
