The Mira Costa Drama Department held its first performance of its fall play, “The Crucible,” on Nov. 1 in the Costa auditorium.

Juniors Julia McDermott and Ryan Fiene and seniors Matt Sena and Gabby Wolf play Abigail Williams, Reverend Samuel Parris, John Proctor, and Elizabeth Proctor, respectively. The play is based on the novel “The Crucible,” written by Arthur Miller. Its story line follows the 1690’s Salem witch trials. In the trials, a group of young girls accuses other members of the town of witchcraft.

“The performance was excellent,” junior Derrick Compas said. “As a person who does not usually attend plays, the experience was very impressive.”

The week leading up to the play, the cast practiced until 9 p.m. every night.

“This play is going great,” Fiene said. “We have worked extremely hard for these past few weeks to put together such a high quality show in such a short amount of time. I feel that all of our hard work is really paying off, and I can’t wait for future plays.”

According to co-Director Carol Matthews, the ticket sales for the play’s opening night were higher than in previous years.

“I feel that we had a great opening weekend,” Matthews said. “I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of people who came to each performance, and also by the students who did such a wonderful job in each show. Everyone seemed to appreciate the hard work the students put into preparing and all of the time they dedicated to doing this play.”

Drama’s final performances of “The Crucible” are tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from Dietz Brothers Music Co., Patterson Cleaners, Tiffany Cleaners, the Drama Department web site and at the door for $12. Drama hopes to continue its success with its upcoming Winter Benefit show.

“We hope that our success continues with our upcoming performances,” Matthews said.
