WHERE IT BELONGS: Nicolas Cage (above) stars as pilot Ray Steele in the abysmal “Left Behind.” His disinterested acting is one of many glaring flaws that riddle the film, delivering an abomination of a movie.

On September 17, 2014 the California Governor Edmund G. Brown signed into law a new senate bill 1221 which is an improvement to after school programs for schools in California. The bill was drafted to implement the ASES program (After School Education and Safety) throughout California schools.

This new bill will bring in more funding for schools with after school programs that follow the ASES model and will provide grants. For schools to receive the funding they must provide students with “an education and literary element with homework assistance and an educational rich environment”.

The grants from this program and the new bill are mainly meant to help support schools with lower academic performance.

“I think it it would something that would be good to look into to be another useful tool for our students to learn and get extra help. Currently at Mira Costa there is the library open for student if they want space to learn,” principal Dr. Dale said.

This new bill and its grants are mainly meant for schools that have low academic performance but could be still implemented for use at a school that preforms well for students that need it.

” At Mira Costa there is some help if kids need help after school where kids can get tutoring at the library and kids can go in there whenever they want. We also support kids with independent study using the SCROC program where they go to Torrance for help,”Principal Dr. Dale said.

The program that the state is looking to implement must not be the same as what is being taught during the school day but can be used to help students who need help with their work. The activities during the program would be used to enhance the core curriculum.

With afterschool programs they can be hard for students to used to help them learn because many students especially at costa have lots of other programs they have already been apart of. Many students are active in either sports or other extracurricular activities. Those students that do extra activities after school usually will have to do extra work on their own.

“The hard thing about having after school programs for students is that many of our students either play sports or work with other clubs or programs that would not let students use ,” Current Principal Dr. Dale said.

“Strengthening and increasing the access to after school and expanded learning programs is a top priority and high quality programs help students succeed inside and outside the classroom,” State superintendent of public instruction.
