Sophomore Molly Ghiselli combines her passion for sewing with her passion for style as she creates her own homemade versions of a very popular overpriced LF brand shirt.

Ghiselli began making homemade versions of the popular lace shirts in May. She was inspired to begin making her own shirts after seeing the overpriced originals being sold at the local LF store.

“The shirts being sold in store were too expensive and I didn’t want to pay for them,” Ghiselli said. “I just figured, why can’t I make them? So I decided to make my own and I wore it to school and received a good response from the girls there.”

Prior to making these shirts, Ghiselli said she was always interested in clothing. Ghiselli said that as a child she was also constantly involved in sewing and created many different clothing items utilizing her skills.

“I used to take sewing lessons when I was little and ever since I’ve always been making things,” Ghiselli said. “At first it wasn’t very good, but as I did it more, I got a lot better and that’s what helped me start making these shirts.”

Ghiselli intended to just make a shirt for herself,  but after receiving a positive reply from friends, she decided to start selling them to other girls interested. After making them for her friends, other Costa students began hearing about her shirts and purchasing them from her as well.

“As my friends started posting pictures of my shirts advertising my business, people got really interested,” Ghiselli said. “In the beginning, word about my shirts spread a lot through social media and other people talking about how much they liked the shirts.”

In order to promote her shirts, Ghiselli created an Instagram account, @LovenLacedesign where she posts various pictures of girls wearing her shirts for all around the nation. Since the start of her account she has gained a plethora of new customers.

”After I made my Instagram a lot of more people started buying my shirts and that was really exciting,” Ghiselli said. “I went from making 1 or 2 shirts every week to making 3 or 4 in a week and that was really impressive how quickly word spread and how many more people were buying.”

After gaining recognition via Instagram, Ghiselli decided to start an Etsy shop in where she directly sells her lace up shirts. In efforts of expanding the variety in her store she recently added her own selection of homemade chokers.

“My sister goes to college in Texas and she started helping me as soon as I got my Etsy account up,” Ghiselli said. “Ever since then, the majority of my customers are college girls who want their shirts customized for football games.”

Ghiselli makes all of her shirts directly from her home out of minimal materials. All she requires is a shirt to style, black trim, black eyelets and some form of string to lace the shirts. A shirt takes 20 minutes to an hour depending on the specific design suggested by the customers.

“Once my etsy shop was up I started getting orders from all over,” Ghiselli said. “It wasn’t just girls from Costa and it really expanded my business and increased my income.”

In the future, she plans on expanding the variety of the clothing she sells on her etsy shop Ghiselli said. She hopes to keep the pace of orders at its current state.

“I really enjoy doing this and I’m glad my business really expanded because I’m able to do something I love,” Ghiselli said. “I hope that in the future I continue to do this for a while.”
