The Mustangs were victorious against the View Park preparatory Knights, after various rushes to the try zone.

Mira Costa boys rugby team defeated View Park Preparatory High School, 55-0, at home on Saturday. Despite an absence from senior captain Jonah Tavai, Costa easily swept their opposing team with assistance from top performer, senior Kaden Loversky.

“Overall I think we did a great job,” sophomore Jackson Fischer said. “We played cohesively as a team and communicated with each other which gave us good results.”

In the first period of the game, Costa outplayed View Park on both sides of the field holding View Park scoreless. For the Mustang’s offense, Loversky scored three tries along with senior Robert Fiene and junior Dylan Swerdlow who scored their own separate tries to help Costa end the half with a 31-0 lead.

“We started off the game strong on offense with little error,” junior Aidan Martinez said. “We gained the early lead and our defense was also strong from the start because we made good tackles.”

Boys rugby continued to offensively fire during the second period, scoring an additional twenty-four points while maintaining a strong defense. Junior Slade Gordon and senior Max Stewartson both scored a try along with Martinez, who scored two tries. Loversky converted all the tries for the additional points.

“As a team, I think we played a very solid game and even though we were missing our captain, Jonah Tavai, and a couple other good players, it was nice to take home the win,” junior Evan Anderson said.

The Mira Costa boys rugby team is now 2-1 overall and will next face off against Redondo Union High School at home tonight at 7:00 pm. The team is hoping to keep their strong offense and defense going into their game against the rival Seahawks, Anderson said.

“We have been working very hard throughout the week at practice, and if we go into the game [on Friday] confident and play rugby as we usually do, we should win the game,” Anderson said.
