Manhattan Beach fireman holds up his trophy after winning a round of one of the pumpkin races. The races took place on Sunday, October 28th around 12:00 at the Manhattan Beach pier.

Pumpkin race referee smashes one of the pumpkins. Historically, if someone doesn’t follow the rules of how to build a pumpkin and what materials to use, their pumpkin will be smashed the day of the race if it’s caught.

Parents and kids line up their pumpkins at the starting line. The race was originally created in Manhattan Beach on Halloween Eve in 1990 by Karl Rogers, Michael Aaker and John Holliday.

MB father holds up his spider man pumpkin as his son poses in his matching costume. In 2007, the race was awarded the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Special Event of the Year award and the California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) Award of Distinction.

Father asssits his two daughters dressed as bat woman with their bat themed pumpkin. Over 5,000 area residents attended the Pumpkin Race every year.
