In 1975, legendary rock band Queen released the song “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which held the top spot on the charts for nine weeks and the film is incredible enough to do the same thing.

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” the recent biographical film that focuses on the band Queen and its legacy, features incredible acting prowess from the leads and is highly detail-oriented, creating visually pleasing and accurate recreations from the band’s past. The camera work and the incorporation of Queen’s original songs make the viewer feel as though they are at a live Queen concert.

Bryan Singer directed the film and Graham King produced it.  “Bohemian Rhapsody” opened on Nov. 2 and currently holds the top position at the box office. With over $50 million in ticket sales within the first weekend of the release, the film is projected to keep its place at the top for weeks to come. Actor Rami Malek portrayed band member Freddie Mercury, Ben Hardy played member Roger Taylor, Joseph Mazzello portrayed member John Deacon and Gwilym Lee played Queen member Brian May.

The story is focused on Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury and how he came to be the rock legend that he is today. The film begins with the start of his career in joining the band, through his struggles with his sexuality and addiction, ending with his early death from AIDS in 1991.

The amazing soundtrack draws viewers in and makes the movie extremely realistic. The film incorporates Queen’s most famous and popular songs,  which only adds to the overall fantastic quality of the movie. The viewer can feel the emotions of both the songs and Mercury at each moment of his life. Watching “Bohemian Rhapsody” in theaters is like no other, with the sound leaving the viewers in awe of how talented Queen and most importantly, Freddie Mercury were.

Malek’s outstanding performance as Mercury transports the viewer back in time. The costumes, makeup and the way in which Malek carries himself only add to the authenticity of the film. Malek’s dedication to his character is shown and pays off in the recreations of Queen’s performances. Malek put in a stunning amount of work into perfecting his character, which is ultimately what makes his performance as amazing as it is.

The set design brings the film to life as it changes the mood of the scenes as time passes. Every set is perfectly planned out down to the instruments on stage during concerts and even the pictures hanging on the wall, which give the illusion of being in the late 20th century.

Along with the realistic casting, the costumes and make-up seem like exact replicas of the members of Queen, which make viewers feel as if it’s an authentic Queen concert and adds to the quality of the actors’ performances. Actor Gwilym Lee’s wig is the most accurate to lead guitarist Brian Mary’s hair and sticks out the most in the film.

The camera work in the film is exceptionally vivid and the close up shots allow viewers to see the distinct emotions on the actors’ faces. The film gives a concert-like experience in each performance, which is portrayed like the exact concerts played by the real band.
