I would not CALL Carly Rae Jepsen’s latest album “Dedicated” another 2012 hit. And if it were up to ME, MAYBE she should put down the microphone and hand it over to the next Canadian idol.

Though Jepsen’s album lacks creativity and authenticity from a musical production standpoint, her lyrics throughout the album attempt to convey a greater message about self acceptance and rejecting social norms.

But more specifically, her early release song from Nov. 2018, “Party For One,” encapsulates the theme of the album, embodying the idea that self love and confidence should be prioritized in everyone’s life. Unfortunately, the synthesized sound distracts the listener, causing the lyrics to lose its purpose.

Synthesized sound is a huge distraction throughout the entirety of the album. Songs such as “Now That I Found You,” “Everything He Needs” and “Happy Not Knowing” all start with an annoying and unoriginal synthesized sound, and they all follow a basic beat that almost every other pop song has.

Jepsen’s vocals are nothing special and do not shine on her latest album release. Her voice has not improved from her first hit “Call Me Maybe,” but thankfully they have not become any worse, which is good for her because this album needs every win it can get.

The album also lacks a immense amount of creativity and authenticity. Overall, it sounds like an album that would be played on the radio for a day or two and fade out into the sea of basic and forgotten songs.

The one song on the album that is actually pleasing to the ear is “Feels Right.” The song is a collaboration with Electric Guest and it brings about an alternate and more optimistic opinion on her album. The lyrics are somewhat boring, but the rhythm and overall sound are surprisingly fun to listen to.

Though some of her songs might not be perfect for the radio, they could possibly be heard in background and theme music in cheesy teen romance stories.

In all, Jepsen’s attempt at another hit song or album is a miss. She has faded behind the big name female pop stars, and probably will not be seen trying to make a name for herself again anytime soon.

“Dedicated” was released on May 17 and is available on all music platforms including Spotify, Itunes and Apple Music.
