Students write letters to spread happiness

While there are a number of clubs at Costa attempting to help those in need, new club Cards for a Cause has taken a different simple approach to reach out to those around them, one card at a time.

Freshmen Candace Cameron and Erin McCarthy started Cards for a Cause this year. Members write cards to many people in need, including the elderly, hospitalized children and members of the military.

“We wanted to start a fun club at school that no one had started before,” Cameron said. “When I was in elementary school, my class wrote cards to senior citizens for the holidays. It was so much fun, and we decided to start a club based on that.”

Every week, club members write cards for these different groups of people. Cameron and McCarthy, along with other club members, enjoy writing and creating these cards as they have a special connection to the project.

“My grandpa has dementia, and I see how little attention he gets from young people,” McCarthy said. “I like being able to brighten the day of people just like him.”

Outside of school, the club takes trips to the Sunrise Assisted Living in Hermosa Beach to deliver some of the cards they make in person.

“The residents at Sunrise really appreciate us coming and are ecstatic when we deliver letters to them,” McCarthy said. “The occasion is always special to them.”

Although the club is currently busy with all its projects, Cameron and McCarthy hope to expand their club to other local high schools and increase the scope of their outreach to different hospitals and senior assisted living homes.

“We hope to make contact with the United Nations high commissioner for refugees so we can deliver cards to refugees and displaced families,” McCarthy said.

The club impacts not only on the people who receive their cards but the members of the club as well.

“I realized how one letter can better a person’s life,” McCarthy said. “The cards let them know that someone is thinking about them.”
