Colorful plastic Lego blocks have provided entertainment for generations of children, and now by introducing the toys to animated form, “The Lego Movie” takes theaters by storm.

“The Lego Movie,” directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is a must-see film that boasts a stellar cast and script, while unique special effects create a distinctive experience for all ages. With random humor and an uplifting plot, the film is an undeniable crowd pleaser.

“The Lego Movie” takes place in the Lego universe, where all matter is made up of Legos. The plot centers around unremarkable Lego construction worker Emmett Brickowski (Chris Pratt), who is mistaken for a hero after finding a powerful relic. Emmett is then sent on a mission to save the universe from Lord Business (Will Ferrell). Emmett is accompanied by a variety of characters, ranging from the rebellious Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), the prophet Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman) and Batman (Will Arnett).

Throughout their adventure, Emmett and his friends showcase a wide-ranging sense of humor for all ages. Every character maintains comedic value. For example Emmett, Batman and Vitruvius use witty, sarcastic lines, puns and offbeat situations to amuse the viewer. With a film that encompasses everything from robotic pirates to DC superheroes, the silly comedic edge that is ever-present ties everything together.

“The Lego Movie” is not only humorous, it is also a touching, inspiring story about finding and embracing the idea that everyone is unique in an individual way. In the film, each of the characters is given defining characteristics that present them as special in a unique way. The most notable example is how Emmett the genius hides behind a facade of being average. This heartwarming theme is an important facet of the film, as it catapults it from simply a humorous film to one that resonates on an emotional level.

Emmett’s lack of heroic traits make the film relatable to any audience. However, he still comes off as admirable in his resourcefulness. Such layered characterization is also seen in Wyldstyle, who initially comes off as very rebellious, but is further revealed to have a more gentle nature. The characters’ realistic personalities give the film life and makes the movie all the more admirable, given that the subjects are no more than plastic toys.

However, the true wonder of the film is not found in the characterization or humor, but in the film’s entirely Lego aesthetics. Every location in the film is varied, with the scenes moving from cities in the sky to towns in the Old West, with every aspect, from roaring waves to massive canyons, being more impressive, given that it is entirely made of Legos. The originality of this visual style is all the more impressive; it is different from anything ever seen in a film

“The Lego Movie” is a thoroughly outstanding film that mixes creativity, heart and humor to create one of the most uplifting and entertaining films for all ages to enjoy.

“The Lego Movie” is rated PG and is now playing nationwide.
