Mira Costa wrestling placed seventh against 18 other schools in the South Tournament at South Torrance High School on Saturday with sophomore Jared Williams placing first in his weight bracket.
The Mustangs came out strong despite several missing wrestlers due to fall sports still being in session. Other top performers include senior Matt Savino placing second and seniors Alex Chaney and Niilo Niemo placing third in their respective weight brackets. According to junior Brendan Brady, the team will only get better as more players return.
“It was overall a great kickoff tournament,” said junior Brady. This is our first step to repeating as CIF champs.”
The Mustangs next meet is away at San Pedro High School on Thursday. With a strong first tournament, Costa will continue to improve as more players return from their fall sports to compete for CIF again for wrestling again this year. According to Brady the team has continued to prepare for their upcoming match.
“The team’s been working hard in practice in preparation for the season,” Brady said. “With the addition of two new coaches, our skills have improved immensely.”
