Mira Costa students have volunteered as interns for the November 8 assembly campaigns.

Citizens of the 66 District in California will vote for either David Hadley, the incumbent Republican candidate, or Al Muratsuchi, the Democratic candidate, for state assembly. Both candidates have given students the opportunity to volunteer.

“I chose to intern for Al Muratsuchi because of the great things he has done and will do for our community,” Costa sophomore and intern Ally Kennedy said. “I also thought that an internship for a political campaign would be interesting since I, up until then, had no idea what really went on during a campaign.”

Both campaigns visited the Mira Costa Model United Nations classes to present information about their campaign to recruit interested volunteers. Representatives and interns from the Muratsuchi campaign visited Costa and Redondo Union High School to spread information about the internship and allow those interested to sign up to set up an interview.

“The most important job for an intern is to not just to get people to vote for your candidate, but get people to vote and care about the election,” Costa junior and intern Amalia Lohuis said. “This year is an especially relevant and interesting race, not only on the presidential level, but on the state and local level.”

According to Kennedy, the job entails phone banking for the candidate and canvassing, to general organization around the campaign office. The Hadley campaign internship includes similar jobs such as distributing lawn signs and hosting events.

“My favorite job as an intern is canvassing. I love being face to face with people and raising support for Al,” Kennedy said. “Whether they do or don’t support him, each door that opens is a new opportunity for personal growth and for growth support of his campaign.”

If either candidate is elected to the assembly, they will be creating and voting on laws and bills that concern California. The 66the District includes the cities of Gardena, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, Harbor City and Harbor Gateway, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Torrance, El Camino Village and West Carson.

“The goal of the interns and the campaign is to get Al’s message across,” Kennedy said. “If elected, he will do nothing but help improve the lives of everyone in District 66.”

According to Lohuis, interns of the campaigns for assembly gives students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in a campaign before the election on November 8.

“Our job [as a school] is to prepare students to be good citizens,” Costa principal Dr. Ben Dale said. “That’s taking it to the next level by participating in the democratic process. Any student that takes an opportunity to that has an amazing experience.”
